My Nightmare Before Christmas by *DevarinStar:iconDevarinStar:

Every night do i find myself stuck in the same hallway of the same house. Always chasing that which i cannot
grasp. I stare at the door and wonder to myself, "Should i continue the chase?" I always seem to, as if
the lunatic inside me thinks another outcome will preveil. Through the door i walk and see the same stairs
to the same window. The window is grand by comparison, and even the view of falling snow is magnificant.
Christmas is close yet i am in no winter wonderland. I see a glimmer of a man i once knew, holding what was
once close to my heart, sitting on the stairs. He looks at me with pain in his eyes. I want to ask what is
wrong but then a shadow catches my eye. This shadow is in the shape of a man, and has the grin that says
im right. He is standing just there at the start of a new hall, waiting, as if he expects something to happen.
I live up to his expectations and start to walk cautiously towards the hall.  Curiosity killed the cat,
i know this, but this curiosity has consumed me. Just as i get close the shadow jets off down the hallway,
i start to run to keep up but it is always of arms length. It becomes a game of cat and mouse with this shadowed
figure. Twisting and turning every which way the hallway runs. There came a point where i no longer knew where i
was but i did not care. The only thing that mattered to me now was catching up with this trickster. His laughter
trailing down the hallway, mocking my every move. It runs through a door. Hell could have been at the other end
of this door, and yet i still ran through it and find something worse then hell; A spiral staircase. Who in their
right mind would put a staircase on the other end of a door? At this point everything seemed trivial for i was
soon toubling down these stairs in full momentum. I was glad i came to my senses when i did, I grabbed the railing
with every ounce of my being and stopped two steps from a marble floor. Shaking and confussed, i look up to find
the biggest room i have ever seen. It was a dark and eerie looking room, but seemed to radiate with inner life
that i had not known before. The room was empty, and yet it held the secrets of life as if it could whisper sweet
nothings across your skin. After five minutes in awe i realized there was a calico staring at me with her feline
eyes from ten feet away. She, too, just waiting there except she did not hold the menacing expectations the
former creature did. I walked towards this cat with a little more caution in my step. Once but four steps away
she turned and walked to a sombre looking door near the back of the room. I follow her to the door at a
leigurely pace. She scratches at the door then turns her head to look at me. Do i dare? Of course i do.
I open the door to find a child playing with a doll near the end of a bed. The bed was a canopy bed, and seemed
to fill the room and stood four feet from the ground. She looked tiny next to it, i wondered how she ever got
into bed, or if it was her room at all. As i look around the room, i find a tiny, well fashioned, step to the
left side. Aha. The girl takes no notice of me, so i decided to continue my little look-see. The room was
decorated in burgundy and gold. It looked expensive and extraordinary in an old fashioned way. There were
two pictures hanging to either side of the bed. As i look closer, i realize that it was a picture of my mother
and my father. Bewildered, I looked back at the girl. She must have finally noticed i was there because she
looked up at me and smiled. To my horror the little girl was me when i was six. I was trying to make sense
of the matter when i heard a scream come from the door i had just come from. The girl must have heard it to,
she looked frightened and ran for a door next to her bed that i had not noticed. why were they always running
through doors? I opened the door to chase after her but once through the door horror struck me again.
I ended up at the back of an opera house that was packed with people dressed in 1920's attire. They were
all standing for an ovation to the actors on stage. I catch a glimpse of the little girl running down the
isle towards the front of the stage. No one takes notice of her. I scream for someone to grab her but no one
hears me. I start running to the front still screaming, but all that could be heard was clapping. I reach the
front and nothing is left but my screams. I stop screaming, still nothing,I look at the stage and the drapes were
drawn. I look behind me to find that the theatre is empty. I turn back to find the little girl running through
a side door on the right of the stage. With no time to wonder what had happened to everyone, i run to the side
door and throw it open. To my amazment it led me outside. The ground covered in snow and me with no coat.
I turn to go back through the door but find that there is nothing but a brick wall where i had just been.
I decide not to wonder anout anything any more. My mind just accepted that the door has disappeared.
I start walking along the side the wall to hopefully find another door. I look up into the falling snow,
there was a faint glow coming from the other side of the clouds that told me the moon was high and
it was late. The ground started to ripple and shatter. I awoke to my brother hitting me over the head with
a rolled up blanket that had a bow on it. He kept saying over and over, "Danielle! wake up, it's christmas!"
I walk through to the living room. I opened the biggest present that had my name on it to find a beautiful
painting. It was of an old house, with a very large window in the front and a snow covered ground and it looked
as though the artist painted it at night.

Author's Comments

This is actually half true, and half fake. I actually did have this as a dream, but it was not the night before christmas, nor did any of the christmas present stuff happen.

This is a submission to the "Nightmare Before Christmas" contest the chat room DANightmares is holding.
